ABOUT CASL Summit
It is common knowledge that student leaders exert enormous influence on the entire student body on Campus. It is equally true that student leaders including Prefects often catalyze peace or chaos in school depending on how responsible or recalcitrant they are. Perhaps more importantly, most former students’ leaders emerge as public figures occupying varying leadership positions in the larger society, once out of school.
This is the reason Foundation for Leadership & Education Development – FLED, in collaboration with the Michael Okpara University of Agriculture, Umudike, is hosting the 2025 CONFERENCE OF AFRICA STUDENT LEADERS – CASL.
The purpose of the Conference is to provide a platform for student leaders from tertiary institutions in Africa to exchange ideas, share knowledge, sharpen leadership skills and values, and work together to set higher standards of democratic leadership practices on their campuses.
CASL Objectives
- To promote the principle of deliberative democracy and empower students on how to handle conflicts, authority/power, decision-making, and portfolio management;
- To provide the opportunity for creative interaction and cross-fertilization of ideas among student leaders across Africa;
- To promote the culture of mutual benefit between students and host communities where their campuses are located;
- To recognize, promote, and reward good leadership styles among students, individually and collectively.
The first CASL Summit was held at the National Centre for Women Development, Abuja, in August 2022, with the theme: Students Leadership & Democratic Culture in Africa: A Dialogue on Values
2Nd Biennial Conference
Theme: Rebuilding Responsible Students Unionism through Continuing Leadership Development
CASL 2025 Summit will deliberate on how student leaders could redefine Africa’s development paradigm through continuing leadership development and adherence to democratic values.
Sub-themes
Students Politics: Lessons of Experience
Working in groups, participants will seek to find out what is happening, why it is happening, who is responsible, what are the impacts, and what needs to be changed, improved, and restructured.
Capacity Building for Leadership Competencies
During parallel workshop sessions, participants will learn practical skills in cross-cultural conflict resolution/mediation, decision-making, deliberative skills, Balancing gender in students’ leadership, etc.
Community Engagement & Relations
This sub-theme will explore how students could improve relationships with their Institution’s host Communities through Volunteer engagements.
Communication for Leadership Impact
This sub-theme will examine communication issues between authorities and students’ leadership; and among student leadership. It will explore the gaps and the consequences. It will offer better communication options for improving understanding of responsible engagement between school authorities and students.

Conference Speakers & Organization
There will be thematic Guest Speaker Presentations and Parallel workshop sessions.
Participation Guidelines
- Students are to attend as delegates, sponsored by their institutions or Students Union body.
- Institutions can send a minimum of 3 and a maximum of 1o student delegates to the summit.
- Institutions are to sponsor their senior staff whose duties pertain to the Summit.
- Individual delegates from non-academic institutions are welcome.
- Delegates must make a registration payment before receiving the link for registration.
Participation fee
Student Delegates:
Online: N10,000/$20
Onsite: N25,000/$35
Other Delegates
Online: N20,000/$30
Onsite: N40, 000/$100
Please note: Payment is what guarantees registration and participation. We encourage Schools to Register their Students as a group, by paying for them together online.
Fee covers only lunch at the Summit venue each day and summit materials. It does not cover accommodation and other associated logistics. Participants will take care of travel logistics by themselves.

About the University Host
The Michael Okpara University of Agriculture Umudike (MOUAU), formerly the Federal University of Agriculture, Umudike, was established as a specialized University by the Federal Government of Nigeria via Decree No 48 of 2nd November 1992. It began formal activities in May 1993 with the appointment of the first Council and Vice-Chancellor, Professor Placid C. Njoku on 27th May 1993, while other key officials of the University were appointed later.
The Institution is located in the well-known Agricultural Training and Research town of Umudike, about 9 kilometers from Umuahia town, the capital of Abia State. The major link road to the University is the Umuahia – Ikot Ekpene Federal Road, a direct route to the State capitals of Abia, Akwa–Ibom, and Cross River.
The University is close to Umuahia and is linked through a major North-South Express Road to most parts of the country. MOUAU currently has a student population of around thirty-nine thousand and seventy-eight (30,078).
The current Vice-Chancellor is Professor Maduebibisi Ofo Iwe. He is a distinguished professor at the university’s Department of Food Science and Technology (FST) who succeeded the (LATE)Prof. Francis Ogbonnaya Otunta is the sixth Vice-Chancellor of the university. He is also a Professor of Food Science Technology and former Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Academics) of the university. He assumed office on Tuesday, March 1, 2021.
