The FLED Rule – Guiding Ethical Dialogue at FLED Institute Convenings

Open. Ethical. Responsible. Inclusive.

The FLED Rule is an African-rooted ethical framework that guides all workshops, policy labs, dialogues, and convenings hosted by FLED Institute. It ensures that participants can engage openly, share ideas responsibly, and contribute to knowledge and policy development while protecting individual, institutional, and community integrity.

Core Principles

  1. Responsible Confidentiality
Participants may discuss insights from convenings but must respect the privacy of individuals, organisations, and communities. Sensitive information should not be attributed without consent.
  2. Ethical Use of Knowledge
Information shared in FLED convenings must be applied constructively to advance public good, policy development, or leadership capacity. It must not be used for personal gain, political advantage, or harm.
  3. Transparency and Accountability
While content may inform broader initiatives, participants should acknowledge the convening as the source. Misrepresentation of statements, decisions, or positions is prohibited.
  4. Inclusive Participation
All voices are respected and protected, especially those of vulnerable or minority participants. Open dialogue is encouraged without fear of reprisal, balanced with ethical responsibility.
  5. Stewardship of Collective Knowledge
Ideas and outcomes generated are considered collective intellectual assets. Participants are encouraged to document, share, and apply knowledge ethically for societal benefit.

Why It Matters

The FLED Rule promotes:

  • Open and honest dialogue without fear of misuse
  • Ethical and responsible knowledge sharing
  • Inclusive participation and respect for diverse perspectives
  • Trusted convenings for leadership and policy development in Africa

By applying the FLED Rule, FLED Institute ensures that convenings are safe, ethical, and impactful, reflecting our commitment to responsible leadership and institutional integrity.
