Background

Youths possess energy, enthusiasm, morality and drive to  contribute to the development of society. Many young adults in Africa want to make a difference, but they often feel powerless and lack opportunity to contribute. They complain that formal education rarely prepares them to see the global picture; where they fit in, and how they can become instruments of social-political and socio-economic change in their world.

GCLP

Global Citizenship and Leadership Program – GCLP – is an integrated educational leadership program that prepares youths for the challenges of leadership in an increasingly globalized world. GCLP helps participants to build a set of core assets and competencies to enable them function effectively as global citizens.

Over a period of one year, students in GCLP are engaged in lectures, research, educational visits and problem solving activities and volunteer work.

GCLP is predicated on three principles

Critical/systems thinking

Moral Reasoning

Individual/collective responsibility for global change

The Mission of GCLP is to answer four questions

  • How youths develop a holistic thinking capacity necessary to understanding the intricacies of world affairs?
  • How can we use leadership education to create a new set of leaders concerned about moral and ethical issues?
  • How can Africa’s youths become instruments of social change especially in preventing conflicts and political corruption?
  • How can youths be motivated to take local actions that promote global citizenship beginning from their immediate environments?
